Chapter 20

Visualization Techniques

Mediums and Shades paired up around the large tiled room. The first indication that these students were more experienced than the ones Nick had seen yesterday came when the pairs were able to anchor without hesitation.

Wanting to demonstrate to Professor Crawford that he was capable of keeping up, Nick was able to anchor with Jessica well before her S.E. touched his skin. This earned a raised eyebrow from the professor, but she went back to scanning the progress of the other students.

When she appeared satisfied with everyone’s status, Professor Crawford did a few calf raises and clasped her hands a few times. “Are we ready to get started?”

Most of the women in the room gave hoots and claps of their own to show their enthusiasm.

Why are these students so much more energetic than the ones in my other classes?

Probably because making magic’s fun, Nicky.

Sure, but I don’t remember shock practice being particularly fun.

Yesterday, we weren’t using visualization. Visualizing is what makes magic more enjoyable. You get to create things using your imagination.

Instead of pestering Jessica with more questions, Nick paid attention to the professor.

“Today, we’re going to start small. I’ve just given our newest student a demonstration of the Verglas Spikes spell. I’ll do it once more for the class, and then you’re all going to give it a whirl and absolutely rock it.”

Another round of hoots and cheers went through the small group.

Professor Crawford fashioned a second group of icicles at the tips of the fingers of her left hand. This time, they were the size of rulers. She held her palm up and waved it in front of her students. The long icicles began spinning at a breakneck velocity. “Any guesses for what I’m using as a reference for my visualization?”

“Christmas morning,” one Medium called out.

“A blizzard,” another answered.

The professor’s face brightened. “Excellent guesses, ladies, but I think you’re missing one of the components of visualization—personalization.” She pointed her hand toward the eastern wall, and daggers of ice smashed into the tile a fraction of a second later.

The woman in the yellow leotard paced in front of her students. “I was visualizing the ice that formed in my dad’s beard after we went on a morning walk in January when I was nine.”

A couple of the Mediums nodded to one another.

“The clearer and more distinctly you can visualize the memory, the easier it will become to manipulate the S.E. and perform magic with your Shade. Also, the faster your spikes rotate, the more accurately they’ll fly. Secondly, each spike’s ice walls must be thin, or they’ll be too heavy to shoot.” Professor Crawford stopped pacing and clapped. “Alright, let’s get started! Give each other some space and send all of your projectiles toward the far wall. I want to see shattering, not chunking!”

Nick walked to an open spot. He lifted his hand and stared at his palm like he’d seen the professor demonstrate.

So, I just think about a time when I was cold?

Kind of. Like Professor
